This is the highest level of collegiate football and forms part of Division I Football with the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and was formerly called Division I-A.

Each team plays a 12 game season from August to December. The last game of the season is the Army-Navy Game which takes place the following weekend. Eligible teams are chosen for the post season that is made up of 41 Bowl games including those that make up the College Football Playoff. The post-season begins in December and ends in January with the Champions being crowned at the College Football Playoff National Championship in January.

Currently FBS schools are restricted to giving financial assistance to 85 full scholarships and must have a minimum of 15,000 at home games per season.

The College Football Playoff, first ever since the game began in 1869, began in 2014 with the top 4 teams playing towards the National Championship.
Both Liberty and New Mexico State are playing as FBS Independents.
