TEAM HISTORY
ARMY BLACK KNIGHTS
Army represents the United States Military Academy with all of its students obliged to take part in athletics. Their nickname derives from the 'Black Knights of the Hudson' which they were given due to their black uniforms and was officially adopted in 1999. They also take part in the Commander-in-Chief Trophy (including Air Force) and closes each season with the Army-Navy Game which has been contested since 1893.

BRIGHAM YOUNG COUGARS
Brigham Young uses Cosmo the Cougar as their mascot and scholarships and other benefits are offered to the bearer. BYU refuses to play games on Sundays as is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and the overwhelming majority of its students are members of that church. Whilst a member of the Mountain West Conference, it was getting less than $2 million a year through its contract with The MTN so it created its own cable channel called BYUtv through a contract with ESPN which means its has greater freedom as an independent and now gets between $800,000 to $1.2million per every home game.

LIBERTY FLAMES
Liberty, who will become an FBS Independent in 2019, uses the mascot Sparky.

MASSACHUSETTS MINUTEMEN
Massachusetts (UMass)' nickname refers to independently organized civilian colonists who were ready at a minute's notice, hence the name. They are playing as an FBS Independent for the 2016 and 2017 season, until they are able to find a suitable conference. Previously, UMass played a few games at the home of the NFL's New England Patriots up until 2016 and will play 1 game at Fenway Park (home of MLB's Boston Braves) in 2017.

NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES
New Mexico State are called the Aggies because of their agricultural beginnings and will play as an FBS Independent from 2018, having previously played in the Sun Belt Conference.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
Although Notre Dame plays as an Independent, it also plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference for other sports except football but plays as an ACC non-divisional member. It is unsure as to where the nickname Fighting Irish comes from but one possibility is that it was inherited from Irish immigrant soldiers who fought in the Civil War with the Union's Irish Brigade and that Fr.William Corby, CSC, the 3rd president of the university, was at the Battle of Gettysburg, which is commemorated in the painting called 'Absolution Under Fire' which is part of Notre Dame's permanent art collection. But there are many other theories.

It unsuccessfully tried to join a conference in the early 1900s, including the Big Ten in 1926, but was turned down reportedly due to anti-Catholicism. All of its home games and most away games are on national television so other teams have a huge financial incentive to schedule games against the team. It joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013 for all sports except football. As part of the agreement, it plays five ACC games a season which meant that it had to reduce or eliminate the frequency of games against its rivals including the cancellation of the Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue series. Its other rivaly series against Boston College and Pittsburgh (Pitt) are now played every 3/4 years. It has also meant resuming old rivalries with Georgia Tech and Miami and scheduling Big Ten teams from time to time.
