The Dunsmore Cup was first awarded in 1980 to the winner of the Ontario-Quebec Interuniversity Football Conference and, upon re-organisation into the Quebec Intercollegiate Football Conference (later the Quebec University Football League and now part of RSEQ), continues to be awarded as the Quebec conference's championship.

In 1997, Ottawa was forced to forfeit due to use of ineligible players, in 1998 the game was settled in double overtime and had to be held over two days. Play on the first day was suspended due to darkness; and in 2001, Laval was forced to forfeit due to use of ineligible players.
Since 2001, both Queen's and Ottawa have played in the Ontario University Athletics conference.
