McGill played the first recorded game of rugby in North America, in 1868, between British army officers and McGill students giving the university the oldest university affiliated rugby club in North America. Rugby gave rise to North American football, with the first game being McGill against Harvard on 14th May 1874. They share their stadium with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.
