The U Sports Football is the recognised organisation that is responsible for intercollegiate athletics throughout Canada, with the US equivalent being that of both the NAIA and NCAA, but plays Canadian Football.
The Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU) was founded in 1906, with the change of name in June 2001 to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport. In June 2016, the CIS was rebranded as U Sports as a recognisable organisation both in English and French.
Simon Fraser (BC) Clan became the first Canadian team to switch from the CIS to the NCAA Division II.
